This summer’s Ashes series has been filled with drama from start to finish. But one of the most surprising stories to come from the tournament is that of Australia’s Ashton Agar. In the space of one day, the 19-year-old firmly cemented his place in cricketing folklore. On his debut on the 11th July, the spin bowler managed an extraordinary innings of 98, helping give Australia a first innings lead of 65.
During his stay at the crease, Agar managed to rewrite the record books. He registered not only his best first class score, but also the highest ever Test score by a number 11. Although he fell agonisingly short of a century, he still gave the crowd at Trent Bridge one of the most remarkable debut performances in history.
Agar’s performance has been made all the more astonishing by the fact that it seemingly came out of nowhere. The young Australian was a virtual unknown before his debut at Trent Bridge. Since then, the cricketing world has been eager to find out everything there is to know about the cricketing prodigy. Who is Ashton Agar, and what first inspired him to don cricket clothing and pick up a bat? Here are a few things you may not have known about cricket’s newest superstar:
He Began the Season Playing for Henley
Although the name ‘Ashton Agar’ was unfamiliar to most cricket fans before his Ashes debut, he was not a complete cricketing novice, although he had been playing on fairly small stages. At the beginning of the English season, he was playing 50-over cricket for Henley in the Home Counties Premier League. He only made his debut for Western Australia this year, and wasn’t added to the Australia A squad until June. After his astonishing debut performance, Agar’s more than proved that his place on the Australian team is deserved.
Cricket Wasn’t Always in his Future
Before he was selected to play cricket for his country, Ashton Agar wanted to become a lawyer. He won a place to study law at Deakin University in Victory; a back-up plan in case his sporting career didn’t take off. However, he made the big decision to put his studies on hold in order to pursue his dreams of playing cricket for his country. After his excellent Ashes performance, it would appear that this gamble has paid off!
He Could Begin a Cricketing Dynasty
Ashton is not the only Agar who’s handy with a cricket bat. His family are all avid cricket fans, and his two younger brothers are also very talented players. Wes and Will Agar (aged 16 and 17 respectively) are, like their older brother, working their way through the Cricket Victoria elite junior system. Could Ashton’s incredible performance eventually be overshadowed by his brothers?
After one remarkable performance, Ashton Agar has a place in cricketing history. Fans of the sport the world over are waiting with baited breath for the next time he picks up his cricket kit for his country.
