The English cricket team finally ended their losing streak against India (which had lasted 13 matches)  in mid-January after taking a 1-0 lead in a five-match one-day series with a nine-run victory at Rajkot.

Despite some initially jittery moments, England gave new one-day coach Ashley Giles a great start to his reign, and successfully defended their 325-4 score.

And victory in the thrilling opening to the series was all the sweeter as it followed a crushing 53-run defeat in a warm-up match in Delhi.

Captain Alastair Cook  (75) and Ian Bell (85) complete star turns at the wicket having chosen to bat first, then James Tredwell returned 4-44 (the best of his career) and Jade Dernbach took the key wicket of Mahendra Singh Dhoni which effectively put a stop to India’s hopes.

Cook later admitted his pride in leading his team to the first one-day win in India since 2006, saying: “Everyone in the dressing room can be proud.”

Making his first One Day International appearance since returning to the game, Kevin Pietersen scored a highly respectable 44, while Samit Patel scored the same not out in only 20 balls. Together with Craig Kieswetter, Patel ensured the innings ended with real panache to see England sail past the 300 runs mark.

For his part, Indian team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who smashed four sixes during his 25-ball innings of 32, shouldered some of the responsibility for his side’s result.

England went through 5-0 whitewash defeats in their last two series in India.
