Lots of people around the UK regularly pick up their cricket gear and get stuck into the sport. One man who’s certainly no stranger to the cricket pitch is former England international Michael Vaughan.

He helped to captain his country to an impressive Ashes win over Australia in 2005 and now it seems he is keen to foster talent among the younger generation.

Chance to Shine

As part of the Chance to Shine programme that links cricket clubs to schools in a bid to keep the game alive, the 38-year-old from Sheffield recently headed to his former school in Silverdale, Yorkshire publication The Star reported.

He took part in a coaching session for Year 10 girls that saw the youngsters pick up their cricket bats and test their skills against a bowling machine. The students also got to try out their fielding abilities by performing diving catches onto crash mats.

Tournament final

This training may well come in useful when the Silverdale girls’ team represents the school in a North of England cricket tournament final.

Awesome

Meanwhile, commenting on the cricket star’s trip to the school, PE teacher Paul Bradshaw said: “The visit by Michael was awesome. He has a wonderful knack of making the children and teachers feel like the celebrities, not him. The children were in awe of meeting a former England legend.”

A lifelong passion

By getting people involved in cricket from a young age, it’s often possible to cultivate a lifelong passion in the sport. Many school pupils love picking up a cricket bat and hitting a few balls and team sports like this can be great fun.

It’s much more likely that people will play cricket if they have experience in the sport from a young age. Trying to pick the activity up from scratch as an adult can be tough.
