If you’re looking to improve your batting, there are a number of issues you might want to bear in mind. Of course, it’s important that you have suitable cricket gear, including a bat, pads, gloves, shoes and more.
Also, you’ll need to have good shot selection abilities. The most successful batters are those who choose their strokes well, making aggressive shots when appropriate and playing defensively at other times. Judgement is key.
Batting break down
When you’re standing at the crease, you have around 12 shots to choose from either side of the wicket and your stroke selection will depend on the line, length and speed of any given delivery.
There are three main lines and these are off stump and outside, middle stump and leg stump and outside. Meanwhile, there are five main lengths of delivery. These are bouncer (long hop), short of a length, good length, full length (half volley) and full toss.
Building an innings
In order to build an innings, it’s important to move your feet backwards or forward, depending on the delivery, to get the best position to play a good shot. As a general rule, shorter length deliveries are played on the back foot. These shots include the hook shot, pull shot, square cut and back defence.
The hook, pull and square cut are cross-batted shots in which your arms are fully extended to achieve maximum power.
On the other hand, front foot shots are normally played on fuller length deliveries. The main front foot shots are the off drive, straight drive, on drive, sweep shot and forward defence. While the off and straight drives are played to deliveries that pitch on the off stump and outside, the on drive is played to a ball pitching around leg stump. The sweep shot is played to a ball from a spinner pitching around leg stump and outside.
Putting theory into practice
It’s always a good idea to get to grips with the theory before testing your skills in a game. That said, there’s no substitute for experience built up at the crease and if you’re keen to improve your performance and need new cricket bats and other equipment to help you achieve this, you’ve come to the right place.
